Part of the Solution: Wednesday, July 22

Even before I attended the Stay in New York Conference last month, I have been sensing a growing momentum in New York, as artists recognize it’s critical to strengthen their communities and work together to create change—whether that change is fighting developers’ broken promises at Rheingold Brewery or pushing City Council to pass the Small Business Jobs Survival Act. After a long and productive phone call one day about these topics with artist-photographer Ventiko, she invited me to help create a salon/panel discussion as part of her monthlong residency, Sanctum Santorum. This Wednesday, July 22, at Gallery Sensei in Chinatown, I am happy to join Ventiko, Nicole Brydson, Nyssa Frank, Anthony Rosado, Alex Mitow and Eric Ho to help become “Part of the Solution.” I am excited for the new ideas and inspiration that always come from connecting with people around the topic of community. (Thanks for inviting me, Ventiko!)

Join us for a new meeting of the minds.

You are invited to join the conversation next Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Tutu’s in Brooklyn.

This gathering will continue the conversations we started at our first meeting, and everyone is welcome to participate in this discussion. From 7-9 PM, we will be brainstorming and sharing ideas about collectives, sharing spaces, freelance and independent teaching opportunities, and more. At 9 PM,  moderated discussion ends and socializing begins.

Some of the people who will help moderate our discussion include:

A Community is Born!

IMG_4703

ARTISTS, CREATORS, LEARNERS, MAKERS, FRIENDS, INCUBATORS:

October 23, 2013—We made a community! And this community already kicks ass! I had no idea what to expect, but it seems obvious already that there will be more events small and large, more idea sharing, more brainstorming and resource pooling. And it’s free. Whether last night was the beginning of the next big things or of a thousand little things, as of today we share something in common that is not 3rd Ward. We are a network. We show up and talk about things and start things and share resources and imagine new ways to work together and help each other and that is beautiful. This community we birthed will eventually need a name. For now, maybe a placeholder hashtag for connecting and conversation? #bknext?

The following pages include all of the promised links and info. Anyone want to share any pictures? Launa and Victoria both have ideas and projects they want to develop right away.  I have included info from recent emails and people I met last night, as well as some ideas that came up during the event. I know there were more. I have a feeling there will be a Facebook or Google group or a wiki or something in the future to keep everyone connected (without blasting all of your email addresses) but for now, I’m wrapping this event with a bow. Onward, fledgling new creative community: keep connecting!—Robin.
