April 30, 2011: Reading with two members of my writing group (formerly Numu, presently nameless called 1441) at KGB Bar in Manhattan on Friday, April 8, for a special NYC version of the long-running LA reading series Tongue & Groove. The complete list of writers comprises East & West coast talents: Chiwan Choi, Jill Kargman, Judeth Oden, Greg Gerke, Robin Grearson, Eric Nelson and Michael Lala.

Curbs and Stoops calls itself an “art accessibility think tank geared toward democratizing access to fine art.” When I met director Ashley Zelinskie, I liked what she had to say, really enjoyed her artwork, and had a lot of respect for the Curbs and Stoops attitude. So I signed up as a contributor to the C&S blog. My first post, up today, is a profile of artist Nathan Lee Pickett. The image below comprises an overview and two detail shots of a recent collaboration between Pickett and the sound-art-design team at Rebaroque, for its Artist Series. As always, feedback is welcome.

This Friday, April 8, popular and long-running LA reading series Tongue & Groove has organized a special one-night reading event in NYC at KGB Bar. I’ll be reading, along with poet/host/curator Conrad Romo, two members of my writers group (Eric Nelson and Mike Lala), and other great writer-readers from New York and Los Angeles. Published! My next story (on paper) will be part of the April issue of The Brooklyn Rail. My first story for the paper, in its February issue, was about 400 words. This latest one, a personal essay, is, uh….much, much longer. I’ve also published some reflections on writing over on Bushwick Daily called Monday Musing. I may also be contributing to the Curbs & Stoops blog in the future. Curbs & Stoops is a new Bushwick art space run by artists who are overflowing with ideas and passion.
Next month there might be a reading through the Numu writers’ group. But as March ends with a chill in the air, I finally finished and submitted a few key projects that took a lot of energy from my memoir manuscript. So it’s time to get back to it. And also next month, I have to find a way to celebrate my first year as a New Yorker. And it feels like it’s only been a minute or two….
